How do powder fire extinguishers work?

Here are the steps for using a powder fire extinguisher safely:

1. First, pull the safety pin, breaking any tamper seal

2. Squeeze the handle of the unit to release the dry powder

3. Aim the nozzle, with a specific focus depending on the type of fire:

– For solid materials, aim at the base of the fire in a sweeping motion, from side to side

– For spilt liquids, begin at your nearest edge and sweep sideways, moving forwards to extinguish more and more of the fire

– For gases, first turn off the supply of the gas and aim the nozzle at the flare of the fire

– For electrical items, if you can do it safely, turn off the power and then aim the powder directly at the fire

4. Keep sweeping the area until the unit is empty; this provides coverage and helps to reduce the risk of reignition of the fire 

How often should a powder fire extinguisher be maintained?

BS 5306 is the British Standard that provides guidance on fire extinguisher testing and maintenance. According to these standards, a basic service should be carried out on powder fire extinguishers annually (once every twelve months) with an extended service carried out every five years. This should be carried out by a qualified and competent specialist, ensuring the unit is fit for purpose and hasn’t lost any charge.

Visual inspections should be carried out regularly by the responsible person or building owner/manager. This helps to spot any signs of deterioration or damage on the unit that may require attention.
