Water Fire Extinguishers
Suitable only for tackling a class A fire, a water fire extinguisher can be used on fires where solid organic materials are the fuel, such as wood, textiles or paper. Water fire extinguisher use involves pointing the nozzle to the flames and suppressing them with a mist or spray that soaks and cools the burning material. These fire extinguishers are identified with a red label.
At Fire Safety Equipment, we supply water fire extinguishers for commercial, industrial and residential premises across the UK.

What can water fire extinguishers be used for?
Water fire extinguishers can only be used for class A fires that involve wood, paper and textiles. This is because they soak the organic materials to cool the core temperature and extinguish flames.
What can’t water fire extinguishers be used for?
Water fire extinguishers cannot be used on class B (flammable liquids), class C (flammable gases), electrical or class F (cooking oils and fats) fires. This is because they will either create more hazards by splashing the materials that are on fire or will not be effective in extinguishing the source.
How do water fire extinguishers work?
Water fire extinguishers work in a relatively simple way once you know the correct procedure. First, position yourself safely away from the fire, then remove any safety pin and tamper seal around the handle area. Aim the nozzle of the water extinguisher at the base of the fire and gently squeeze the handle until the unit activates. You should keep spraying the water until all the flames are extinguished.
The water will not only cool the objects and materials that are on fire, but will also remove oxygen. This is also great for helping to prevent the reignition of fires if the affected area is soaked by the water.
