What is a CO2 Fire Extinguisher Used For?

CO2 fire extinguishers are a crucial fire safety measure for many buildings. They have been uniquely devised for use on electrical fires, making them essential for premises containing a large volume of electrical appliances. But how do they work and when can they be used? The team at Fire Safety Equipment is here to answer all of your questions.

What is a co2 fire extinguisher used for

When do you need a CO2 fire extinguisher?

CO2 extinguishers are distinct in their ability to be used on electrical fires; this is because the CO2 gas discharged is non-conducive, so will not result in electrocution when used on live electrical equipment. They are a popular choice for offices and server rooms as the gas expelled leaves no residue. This will not cause damage to expensive equipment like other extinguishants: water, foam or powder. CO2 extinguishers can also be used on fires fuelled by flammable liquids – commonly referred to as Class B Fires – so are sometimes found in labs or on petrol forecourts.

How do they work?

A CO2 extinguisher is easily identifiable by its black band. It differs in appearance from other extinguishers due to its hard horn and lack of pressure gauge. The extinguisher contains highly compressed CO2 gas that is then discharged as a powerful jet. This displaces the oxygen, starving the fire of fuel.

The CO2 is extremely cold when it leaves the extinguisher, so the user should avoid touching the nozzle and pipe to prevent frostbite burns. CO2 extinguishers can also cause asphyxiation so should ideally only be used in an open area. Extreme caution must be exercised whenever operating these extinguishers in an enclosed space.

How often should CO2 fire extinguishers be maintained?

Like other extinguishers, CO2 extinguishers require regular maintenance. A quick visual inspection should be performed monthly by the designated ‘responsible person’ for the building. They should examine all external features for any visible flaws that could prevent discharge.

Once a year, a thorough inspection of your extinguisher should be conducted by an accredited, third-party assessor; this is mandatory under BS 5036-6 regulations. This technician will carry out several checks: measuring the weight of your extinguisher, taking a pressure reading and inspecting the discharge hose to name a few. Any flaws identified must be repaired as soon as possible to ensure your extinguisher is fully compliant with fire safety laws.

Whereas other extinguishers require an extended service every five years, a CO2 extinguisher is only required to undergo an extended service once a decade due to its highly pressurised cylinder. This rigorous inspection – sometimes referred to as an overhaul – must be carried out at an accredited centre due to its complexity. The extinguisher will be completely discharged and re-pressurised before undergoing a primary valve replacement. An extended service is a lengthy process and many businesses often decide it is more cost-effective to replace a CO2 extinguisher than cover the expense of an overhaul.
